Each year in Sonoma County, California, SAY: Social Advocates for Youth offers support to nearly 3,000 youth and their families. They work to break the cycles of abuse and hopelessness, while fostering "youth who are stable and able to rise to life's challenges and opportunities." With four core service areas - youth crisis housing and outreach programs, housing assistance, counseling, and career and life readiness, their vision is "to plant the seed of change in every child, young adult, and family member they serve to transform the course of their life and the lives of future generations."
SAY estimates there are more than 300 alone and unaccompanied youth in Sonoma County; currently there are 100 youth in their housing program. They have a teen shelter which provides short-term shelter, food, counseling, and referrals for ages 12-17; as well as a young adult shelter that provides short-term shelter with on-site counseling and work-readiness support for 18-24 year olds. A family cottage offers pregnant and parenting youth a safe home for their young families.
In honor of Pride month SendAFriend's $5,000 donation will help SAY continue their work in Sonoma County. Approximately 40% of those they serve are part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
